The 2024 Republican presidential candidates meet Wednesday night for their fourth debate, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. With the Iowa caucuses approaching in a matter of weeks, the debate will feature a smaller field this time, of Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, and Vivek Ramaswamy — after Tim Scott dropped out. Front-runner Donald Trump, once again, won’t attend. Follow along for live updates and analysis from the NR team:

Chris Christie is alleging that Ron DeSantis isn’t being straightforward in his answer about whether Trump is fit for office, when I think DeSantis was quite clear that it’s not a good idea to nominate an 80 year old man who can only serve one time.

LOTS OF CROSSTALK AND SHOUTING MAKE IT STOP

“Father Time is undefeated…I think we have to have somebody younger.” – DeSantis on Trump being too old (younger than Biden, of course, but still too old.) Then pivots, in contrast to Christie, on how easily Trump gets rolled by the DC bureaucracy.

Jeffrey Blehar

DeSantis, the 4th debate in, finally gets around to making the “Trump let you down” argument he should have made from Day One. Good, and dead-on, but too late.

Jim Geraghty

Christie warns that Donald Trump will be only his own retribution.

Are we sure that the GOP electorate has a problem with that?

Jeffrey Blehar

Christie is actually at his most effective when he soberly just calls out Trump like this. Doesn’t raise his voice. This is what makes him a skillful debater. His Trump segment was probably the best of his entire campaign.

Michael Brendan Dougherty

Haley has had to back down on what she’s said in recent weeks on transgender surgeries for minors, making people use their real names on social media, and on taking the word of business to determine America’s level of immigration.

Jeffrey Blehar

Even in the segment supposedly devoted to criticizing Donald Trump the candidates want absolutely nothing to do with criticizing Donald Trump, except Christie.

MODERATORS: “We would now like you to criticize the frontrunner in this race, Donald Trump, whom you are competing with for the nomination.”

CANDIDATES: “No thanks, we’re much happier attacking each other instead.”

Michael Brendan Dougherty

Haley’s strongest moments are when she shows grace under fire, for instance, thanking her on-stage critics for all the attention.

I think her worst moments are bragging about things- like her support from Wall Street- that the voters she needs to persuade will find repulsive.

Jeffrey Blehar

The cryptocurrency debate means absolutely nothing to voters, but it sure does give Vivek Ramaswamy the chance to engage in eNUNCiATION PRACtice.
