The 2024 Republican presidential candidates meet Wednesday night for their fourth debate, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. With the Iowa caucuses approaching in a matter of weeks, the debate will feature a smaller field this time, of Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, and Vivek Ramaswamy — after Tim Scott dropped out. Front-runner Donald Trump, once again, won’t attend. Follow along for live updates and analysis from the NR team:

I did not expect “man dresses” to come up in that context.

Jeffrey Blehar

My suspicion is that this debate is weirdly nasty and personal precisely because all involved understand it is the last one. There’s a lot of sublimated frustration being worked out on that debate stage tonight.

Dan McLaughlin

This debate so far has been far more entertaining than instructive.

Noah Rothman

Christie has taken the lead on going after Vivek tonight, running defense for Haley in the process. It’s an interesting approach if it gives Haley space to make a positive case for herself, but it also deprives her of oxygen and the potential for a “moment.”

Dan McLaughlin

Christie says Vivek is “the most obnoxious blowhard in American politics” and breathes there a man who will disagree?

Jim Geraghty

Well, I think we’ve got our headlines – “your smartass mouth at Harvard,” “you’re the biggest blowhard in America” “go have a meal”… This is the nastiest and most personal debate so far, and maybe some people like the debates turning into something like one of those Comedy Central roasts, but I doubt Christie or Ramaswamy are picking up many new supporters tonight.

Jeffrey Blehar

This debate has now turned into two dudes shouting “DON’T INTERRUPT ME” at one another at maximum volume.

Noah Rothman

“You can put lipstick on a Dick Cheney, it is still a fascist neocon.”

Noah Rothman

If there’s one thing Republican debate watchers have responded to throughout each of these contests, it’s beating up on Vivek. On that front tonight, Christie takes the lead.

Dan McLaughlin

Christie is about to tell Ramaswamy to go get his shine box.
