The 2024 Democratic National Convention is underway in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept her party’s presidential nomination, just weeks after President Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her to succeed him. Democrats produce a legitimately gripping speech about the necessity of justice and prosecuting sex traffickers. They then follow that up with a nonsensical climate-crisis video and speaker, undoing all the work of the previous segment and reminding Americans that they’re an unserious party.

Kamala Harris’s campaign spokesman Ian Sams says vice president will say this tonight

“With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past.

“A chance to chart a New Way Forward.

“Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans”

Does anybody in the world believe that Harris is actually the one to unite the country and end the “decisive battles of the past”?

Al Sharpton conveys the convention’s totally sincere ebullience by screaming “JOY! JOY! JOY!” in an aggressive and menacing tone. Hard not to feel the love when there is an implicit threat behind it.

After pledging that “we” are “gonna join with whites, and browns, Asians,” Al Shaprton added, “We are gonna do a job on those that have done a job on us.”

Can you feel the joy!

Al Sharpton, a vile Jew hater who led an antisemitic progrom against Jews in Crown Heights, takes the stage at the DNC to talk about unity.

Al Sharpton is speaking. Somebody notify the Fire Marshal.

Michigan Congresswoman and U.S. Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin set out to talk about “national security” in her speech tonight. In it, she talked about the importance of “friends” abroad, “leadership” at home, and expanded the scope of the U.S. mission overseas to include climate change and artificial intelligence. At this point, she pivoted to a stalwart defense of the importance of “schools” and the like. All of which is to say that Elissa Slotkin did not, in fact, discuss “national security.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren on Donald Trump and J.D. Vance: “I wouldn’t trust those guys to move my couch.”

Congressman Jason Crow on Vance: “I know a couch commando when I see one.”

Such a conspicuous turn of phrase from these two consecutive speakers, both of whom seemed to echo Tim Walz’s own “couch” joke – the punchline of which was such a killer he felt compelled to lean bug-eyed into the audience and goad them to laugh with a, “see what I did there?”

But are we? I’m not sure we do. It would be nice if either Crow, Warren, or Walz, for that matter, were asked to explain what they’re referencing. Are they willing to own their own insinuation? I doubt it. Alas, we’ll never know.

Philip Klein

Sometimes I just wish the things the Democrats warn about would actually happen. A Republican Party that wants to cut Medicare and Social Security? Sign me up!

The crude jokes about a hoax continue. Colorado Democratic congressman Jason Crow: “I know a couch commando when I see one.”

This is the same congressman Jason Crow who Joe Biden berated on a conference call, suggesting that Crow’s Bronze Star wasn’t as good as his son’s: “Tell me who did something that you’ve never done with your Bronze Star like my son — and I’m proud of your leadership, but guess what, what’s happening, we’ve got Korea and Japan working together, I put Aukus together, anyway!”
