Despite another year of wall-to-wall positive media coverage for organized labor, the union membership rate ticked down in 2024.

E very year is a banner year for American labor unions, according to the media. If their coverage was all you knew about organized labor in the U.S., you’d think union membership was soaring as countless workplaces, no matter how seemingly irrelevant, receive national news stories about their organizing drives. You’d think America’s largest and most popular companies are quaking in fear at the overwhelming power of Big Labor. You’d think unions were able to move armies of voters to decide the presidential election and persuade the general public to adopt progressive views.

As I included in past articles from January 2023 and 2024, here’s a sampling of the past year of union coverage from the media:

Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

The union membership rate–the percent of wage and salary workers who were members of unions — was 9.9 percent in 2024, little changed from the prior year. . . . The number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions, at 14.3 million, also showed little movement over the year. . . . The number of private-sector union members declined by 184,000 in 2024, offsetting the increase in 2023. The number of public-sector union members changed little in 2024. . . . The union membership rate in the private sector declined by 0.1 percentage point over the year to 5.9 percent.

The American people overall simply don’t want what organized labor is selling, no matter how much the media tell them otherwise.
