Someone used the word “velocity” at our Ideas Summit last week to describe the rush of events since President Trump’s inauguration.
Indeed, such has been the velocity that at times — despite our doing this for a living — it is challenging to keep up with all the news.
That’s where our humble publication comes in. It’s from NR that I so often learn what the truth is regarding the latest controversy, and what the merits are of the latest legal or policy argument.
If you feel the same way, please consider giving to our spring fundraising drive.
On the myriad, constant legal issues alone, I submit that you wouldn’t want to try to suss them out without consulting the views of Andy McCarthy first, even if you don’t necessarily agree with his interpretations.
In the current environment, so many people have been unmoored by President Trump, jettisoning long-held beliefs so they can be entirely and always pro- or entirely and always anti-.
For us, though, it is our underlying beliefs that matter most. This is not for the sake of mere consistency, but because we believe that they are necessary to a strong and free America.
If you appreciate that honesty and independent-mindedness, I hope you’ll chip in something to this webathon.
When Charlie Cooke, Jim Geraghty, Jeff Blehar, or one of their colleagues issue forth with a thunderous piece, you can be sure that it is sincere, well written, and deeply informed.
When Noah Rothman writes something on foreign policy you disagree with, you can be pretty sure that MBD will have a counter-argument, and vice versa.
There aren’t many places left that relish debate the way NR does, and always as a way to seek and illuminate the truth.
All of this — our forthrightness and our spirited polemics — is geared toward the larger end: I don’t think that there is a publication in the country more committed to defending the American system, and its historical and philosophical foundations, than NR.
We believe that the Constitution is the greatest governing document in the history of man; that honoring traditional virtues is the best means to achieving individual happiness and social strength; that U.S. military superiority is necessary to peace; that Western civilization is distinctive and glorious; and that there is such a thing as objective truth which is ignored or distorted at our peril.
These commitments suffuse everything we do, and if you share them, we’d appreciate any amount you can contribute.
I know you have better things to do than to read pitches from me (there’s news to follow, after all!), and I wouldn’t bother you if it weren’t important.
Among the greatest things about NR is its passionate, deeply engaged readership. You don’t just follow us, but feel like you’re part of us. You care enough to tell us when you think we are right or wrong, to share your thoughts about how we operate, and, yes, to contribute to drives like this.
But that, unlike everything else happening right now, isn’t news. Thank you for reading, and for standing shoulder to shoulder with us for so long and with such abiding loyalty.
