To commemorate the centennial of William F. Buckley Jr., National Review Institute has commissioned a special collection of essays from today’s conservative leaders and paired them with Buckley’s best columns.
William F. Buckley Jr. dedicated his life to fighting against collectivism and in favor of limited government, economic freedom, and moral civilization. A true Renaissance man, he was the editor of a fortnightly magazine, syndicated columnist, television host, mayoral candidate, spy novelist, harpsichordist, and sailor, as well as a husband and father. Buckley worked tirelessly to articulate a principled and intellectually serious conservatism that reshaped the American political landscape. As the historian Lee Edwards observed, “William F. Buckley Jr.’s vision of ordered liberty shaped and guided American conservatism from its infancy to its maturity, from a cramped suite of offices on Manhattan’s East Side to the Oval Office of the White House, from a set of ‘irritable mental gestures’ to a political force that transformed American politics.”
Knight Errant: The Enduring Inspiration of William F. Buckley Jr. is one of the many ways NRI is celebrating the life and work of Bill Buckley during his centennial year. Included in this collection are original essays from Dick and Betsy DeVos, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, and Professor William B. Allen. These essays give insight into the mentorship and inspiration that Buckley provided to generations of American conservatives in business, public service, and beyond. Paired with the original essays reflecting on the ongoing influence of Buckley’s life are selected essays and speeches from Buckley on the same theme. From early National Review columns concerning style and etiquette to his praise for the formation of the Young Americans for Freedom in 1960 to his later reflections on higher education college and educating America’s youth in the American tradition, Buckley offers timeless advice to the young about how to live a life of gratitude and service.
