Now that their party is in disarray, it’s become fashionable for some Democrats to retroactively recognize that gender ideology is anathema to voters.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has already grabbed a life raft to escape the sinking ship, making a major concession on one of the most explosive issues of the last election: men in women’s sports. Newsom, who has a reputation for being a political chameleon, didn’t want to get caught in the minority of what is basically an 80-20 issue. Departing from the party line, he conceded the point to right-wing firebrand Charlie Kirk that trans-identifying male athletes are disenfranchising women.
“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom said in his debut podcast episode of This Is Gavin Newsom.
National Review has been calling out the tragedy that is gender ideology, however, from the beginning — and not just when it was politically convenient to do so. For years, it’s been one of the major issues we’ve focused our reporting and analysis on, and we hope you’ll consider supporting our work, in this area and others, by contributing to our spring fundraiser.
Of course, much of the media elite are still either burying their heads in the sand or doubling down. John Oliver and Jen Psaki continued the gaslighting: It’s barely happening, they insisted, but also, it’s good that it’s happening. And if you observe that it’s happening, you’re obsessive.
“There are vanishingly few trans girls competing in high schools anywhere,” Oliver said. “Even if there were more, trans kids, like all kids, vary in athletic ability, and there is no evidence they pose any threat to safety or fairness. It’s very weird for you to be so focused on the subject.”
This was a lie. Just a few months before the election, a bombshell study from the United Nations found that by March 30, 2024, over 600 female athletes in more than 400 women’s division events across 29 different sports were defeated by trans-identifying men. Male athletes have taken 890 medals from female athletes, the report said.
While Democratic lawmakers such as Senator Cory Booker, Congressman Tom Suozzi, Congressman Seth Moulton, and Senator Chris Murphy are urging their party to at least defer to the states on the issue, they’re motivated by political urgency, not a moral commitment to truth. And their mea culpa is limited to sports. They’ve still not meaningfully confronted the medical scandal of foisting invasive transition surgeries onto gender-confused children and the ethical scandal of transferring violent male felons into women’s prisons.
National Review has been courageous from the start in covering gender ideology in the many institutions it has infected. We’ve given a voice to the victims of this diabolical trend in American culture, from vulnerable female inmates forced to bear predation by unwanted male roommates, to detransitioners grappling with the permanent damage done to their bodies.
When it was still overlooked in the culture wars in 2021, I made it my mission to expose radical gender housing policies in blue-state prisons. I zeroed in on Washington State, where little reporting had been done. My series culminated in the Washington Department of Corrections moving back to the men’s prison a trans-identifying double murderer who was caught in a prohibited sexual encounter with a female inmate.
And while progressive media were quick to dismiss the tragic testimonies of detransitioners as misinformation or the accounts of mere outliers, I highlighted several brave souls and their journeys to physical and emotional healing after they escaped the clutches of an industry keen on profiting off their psychological distress. I released a special podcast miniseries, The Detransitioners, with National Review, to inform audiences of the perils of gender ideology and to warn young people of the same.
Similar to the Democratic operatives increasingly speaking out on the Biden-frailty cover-up, some Democrats are only now moderating on gender ideology because it’s politically expedient. But National Review is dedicated to speaking timeless truths no matter the season and no matter the cost. So if you can, please, chip in whatever you can to our fundraising drive to help support our work. Thank you.
