Mamdani’s Trans Activism Distracts from ‘Affordability’ Agenda

L eading America’s biggest city — the global financial capital, a media epicenter, and a sprawling metropolis of five boroughs covering 300 square miles — is a hard enough job. Addressing quality-of-life concerns, while keeping business humming, should take top priority for any mayor of New York City. Yet socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani has all but vowed to drag his future constituency into the kind of destructive cultural warfare that the rest of the country voted to turn back from last year.

His suddenly impassioned advocacy on transgenderism could also prove to be a distraction from the far more popular agenda of “affordability” that Mamdani has been running on all along.

Make no mistake: Progressives’ gender ideology was a considerable part of the reason voters rejected Kamala Harris for president. One of Donald Trump’s most effective ads was about that very topic. Yet here was Mamdani, in a recent campaign ad, with the following message:

Since taking office, Donald Trump has waged a scorched-earth campaign against trans people. The man with the most power has expended enormous energy targeting those with the least. New York will not sit idly by while trans people are attacked. We’ll deploy hundreds of lawyers to combat Trump’s hate, make New York City an LGBTQIA+ sanctuary state, and create the Office of the LGBTQIA+ Affairs.

Progressives just can’t help themselves when it comes to the transgenderism hobbyhorse. Mamdani, it seems, wants New York City to continue to facilitate gender-transition tourism, presumably also for confused children who in their naïveté seek to undergo medical transitions that they may regret later. A majority of American adults (56 percent) support laws that would ban health care professionals from pursuing invasive “transition” procedures and treatments for transgender-identifying minors, according to a Pew Research Center survey released earlier this year. But Mamdani is disregarding that data, wanting New York City to remain stuck in 2020 wokeness.

This would hardly be a political innovation; he would merely be picking up where his predecessor left off. Current Mayor Eric Adams, an independent in the mayoral race until he dropped out, expanded gender ideology’s footprint in New York City. In 2023, Adams signed an executive order prohibiting the use of NYC resources to cooperate with prosecutions or investigations from other states regarding the administering of so-called transition treatment. Then in August, New York City opened the nation’s first taxpayer-funded shelter specifically for homeless transgender-identifying people at a price tag of $63 million.

We can expect Mamdani’s trans activism to be this, on steroids. He’s pledged to spend $57 million on medical centers that provide transition procedures. For a politician who claims that his main pitch is “affordability” for working-class New Yorkers, dumping their taxpayer dollars on a niche identity group that makes up 1.4 percent of New York’s adults hardly seems sensitive to their financial struggles.

If elected, which seems likely with opponent Andrew Cuomo trailing behind, Mamdani may find that his economic progressivism is at odds with his cultural progressivism. Providing supposedly marginalized groups’ expensive accommodations means fewer public resources for others.

While Mamdani argues that Trump has gone “scorched earth” against transgenderism, the far left’s intention was always to impose it across America. The hope was cultural conquest, not peaceful persuasion. Multiple recent shootings have involved assailants who were allegedly partially motivated by transgenderism. Former President Biden made gender ideology a fundamental mission of the U.S. government, assaulting the very idea of truth and eroding the rights of women to have protected spaces free from male predation and voyeurism. Voters repudiated Democrats’ gender innovations at the ballot box, compelled much more by Trump’s economic promises and kitchen-table deliverables.

Mamdani plans to undercut his own affordability agenda by allocating more wasteful spending and attention to the trans issue that will undoubtedly add to New York City’s bureaucratic bloat and make life more frustrating for average residents.
