The teenage victim died in handcuffs after his alleged attacker accused him of racism.
I magine this: An 18-year-old boy, in his first year of college, is walking home from a night out with friends. Suddenly, a man approaches him and, unprovoked, runs him through with a large knife. When police arrive, the attacker claims that the victim — who is writhing on the ground with a three-inch-deep stab wound in one of his lungs, drowning in his own blood — called him racial slurs. Hearing the allegation of “racial abuse,” officers proceed to arrest the injured 18-year-old. The boy, handcuffed and lying on the street, slips from consciousness and dies shortly thereafter.
It sounds dystopian — a scene straight out of a horror-film depiction of a society whose idolatry of progressive anti-racism has turned it totally upside down. But prosecutors allege that this sequence of events is precisely what transpired on December 3, 2025, in the English city of Southampton. Henry Nowak, an undergraduate studying accounting and finance at a local university, was allegedly pursued and stabbed by Vickrum Digwa, who was carrying an eight-inch-long shastar, or knife, as well as a Sikh kirpan, a ceremonial blade. Prosecutors allege that the small kirpan, which Digwa had been wearing around his neck, “satisfies any religious obligation a Sikh may have to carry a blade.”
Digwa, who was recorded by Nowak on a Snapchat video saying “I am a bad man” after he had inflicted a mortal wound on his teenage victim, is now on trial for murder. Digwa’s mother, who was reportedly caught on camera removing the murder weapon from the scene of the crime and hiding it at their home — where police later recovered it — is also on trial.
Digwa’s lawyers claim he was racially abused and acted in self-defense “in the heat of the moment,” although it seems there is no evidence that Nowak said anything offensive to his killer. As the prosecution told the Southampton Crown Court, once a handcuffed Nowak had lost consciousness, the police administered first aid and called an ambulance. Then, “a doctor flew in by helicopter, but there was nothing that could be done to save Henry and he was declared dead.”
“Put simply, Henry drowned in his own blood with his lung having been cut by the knife going eight centimeters into him,” the prosecution said. Digwa “didn’t seek help for the man he had injured with his sizable knife; instead, he accused him of being a racist and being drunk.”
Nowak, who an autopsy found had suffered four stab wounds, had at the time of his death a blood-alcohol content below the legal drunk-driving limit. Jurors were told that while there were no witnesses to the attack, “neighbours heard Nowak say he had been stabbed and was dying, before trying to escape by climbing over a fence,” according to the BBC.
The trial is ongoing, and some evidence is yet to be presented. The local police force has not commented on the officers’ conduct. Digwa’s testimony, police body camera footage, and emergency calls placed by the alleged attacker’s family point to the likely sequence of events: Nowak was stabbed and subsequently accused by his attacker of being racist, which prompted responding police officers to handcuff him as he lay dying.
Nowak’s murder case is nothing short of an indictment of the modern British state itself. British institutions have been bewitched by the spell of cultural leftism to such a pervasive extent that accusing a stabbed, dying boy of being racist is sufficient to cause police officers to place him rather than his assailant in handcuffs. Let that sink in. Britain’s ideologically captured law enforcement agencies have been indoctrinated into a worldview wherein accusations of racism and racial abuse constitute the most severe form of transgression.
And while I find the conduct of the officers in this case appalling, one has to ask: Why should British police officers have any confidence that their superiors would have their backs if they were to rightly depart from progressive ideology’s order of priorities to assist a real victim? This is a Britain entirely in the grip of revisionist, hard-left social and cultural dogma, of which the preeminent commandments are to prevent and punish “racism” and rectify alleged past injustices no matter the circumstances or the cost.
I am presently a graduate student at Oxford. One of Oxford’s main thoroughfares, Cornmarket Street, is infamous for the many vagrants who occupy it and harass passersby at all hours of day and night. Some of the vagrants are particularly aggressive; I’ve had profanities screamed at me on several occasions, and a friend of mine was shoved and stalked by a homeless man as he was leaving a church service. All that is to say that if I were attacked by a knife-wielding man who subsequently told police that his attack had been provoked by my hurling racial insults, I have little confidence that the police would arrest the right person.
Henry Nowak was attacked by a deranged man and died in handcuffs under police detention after being called a racist. In a country that in 2020 was rocked by weeks of protests and riots over the death of a man in America who had nothing to do with Britain, there have been no demonstrations for Henry. His story has attracted very little mainstream media attention. The prime minister, who posted a photo of himself kneeling in 2020, has not made any statement about Henry.
British society is deeply unwell.
