In the American vision of government, final authority does not depend on ancestry, force, or an unmediated mandate from Heaven. All authority traces its way back to the people.
But self-government works only if citizens have the knowledge and judgment necessary to govern themselves. That is why National Review exists, and it is why I am asking for your support.
It can be easy to blame our country’s problems on corrupt politicians or small-minded federal bureaucrats. They deserve plenty of that blame, of course. Under our Constitution, however, final responsibility rests with the American people.

For decades, National Review has defended constitutional government, free enterprise, religious liberty, and a strong national defense against attacks from both left and right.
Too many voices, on both the left and the right, have lost faith in the ideas that made America the greatest nation in the world.
We have not, and we don’t think you have either.
