An Unenviable Distinction

I’m guessing that the number of individuals who have been nominated to federal judgeships by three different presidents is very low. Sonia Sotomayor comes to mind as one: nominated to a federal district judgeship by George H.W. Bush (as a result—see point 1 here—of a deal with New York’s senators), to the Second Circuit by Bill Clinton, and to the Supreme Court by Barack Obama.

But William F. Jung has the unenviable distinction of having been nominated to a federal judgeship by three different presidents and of not yet ever having served as a judge. George W. Bush nominated Jung to a judgeship on the Middle District of Florida in July 2008, right near the end of his second term. Barack Obama nominated him to a judgeship on that same court in late April 2016. And Donald Trump did likewise in December 2017.
