D.C. Events This Week

On Thursday, November 17, I’ll be joining former White House counsel (under President Obama) Kathryn Ruemmler and former associate White House counsel (under President George W. Bush) Reginald J. Brown for a panel discussion titled “The 2016 Presidential Election, U.S. Supreme Court Nominations, and the Supreme Court Vacancy.” NPR’s Carrie Johnson will moderate the discussion. The event, sponsored by the Appellate Practice Committee of the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation, begins at 3:30. CLE credit is available. More information here.

On Friday, November 18, at lunchtime, law professor Steve Vladeck and I will discuss the topic “Blocking Judicial Nominations: Constitutional Prerogative or Constitutional Crisis” at an event sponsored by the Constitution Project. Adam Liptak of the New York Times will moderate the discussion. More information here.

The Federalist Society’s national lawyers convention, taking place over the next three days, is dedicated to “The Jurisprudence and Legacy of Justice Scalia.” On Saturday afternoon, November 19, I will take part in the final event of the convention, a panel discussion titled “Areas of Constitutional Doctrine Transformed.” My fellow panelists are First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams, law professors Michael McConnell, Nadine Strossen, and Eugene Volokh, and Minnesota supreme court justice David R. Stras. Ninth Circuit judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain will moderate the panel. I have been assigned to discuss Justice Scalia’s impact on the doctrine of standing. The full convention schedule is available here.
