Misstating Grassley

According to this Politico article, Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley stated today that he “would wait until the nominee is made” before he decides whether or not to hold a hearing this year. At the same time, he reiterated his position that the Senate should not confirm any Supreme Court nominee this year: “This is a very serious position to fill and it should be filled [sic] and debated during the campaign and filled by either Hillary Clinton, Senator Sanders or whoever’s nominated by the Republicans.”

Somehow the National Law Journal missed Grassley’s second statement, and on the basis of its own oversight is now falsely contending that “Grassley’s comments seem to contradict his remarks made just hours after Scalia died on Saturday to ‘defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court justice.’” As the Politico account shows, there is no contradiction at all.
