Bench Memos

MoveOn Gets Nasty

The NYT reports on MoveOn.org’s new ad, which misrepresents Alito’s record and effectively accuses him of lying and opposing integration. It portrays him as an actor getting coached on how to answer questions about his Reagan administration memos and his record. The article also talks about the new PFAW/AFJ ads alleging that Alito committed ethical violations while on the bench. The charges are not serious, but they will now get more media coverage because of the ad buy. I will admit I don’t like many of the ads that have been run in support of Alito’s confirmation, particularly insofar as they encourage result-oriented evaluation of judges. But these latest anti-Alito ads are simply shameful.
