No Evasion, Please

At the American Principles Project, founder (and Princeton professor) Robert P. George has posted a statement about Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court.  As others have done, Robby notes Kagan’s now well-known 1995 article arguing for open discussion of constitutional questions in Supreme Court nomination hearings:

Because I know Solicitor General Kagan to be a person of integrity, I do not expect her to attempt to evade questions whose legitimacy she affirmed when the nominees of previous presidents were under consideration.

Matthew J. Franck is retired from Princeton University, where he was a lecturer in Politics and associate director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. He is also a senior fellow of the Witherspoon Institute, a contributing editor of Public Discourse, and professor emeritus of political science at Radford University.
