Who is Eric Murphy?

Eric Murphy is President Trump’s nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from Ohio.

Career Notes:

  • Murphy was appointed to his current position of Solicitor General of Ohio by Governor Mike DeWine. In this role, Mr. Murphy has argued cases on behalf of the State of Ohio before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the Ohio Supreme Court.  Mr. Murphy also supervises the filing of amicus briefs filed on behalf of Ohio in the federal courts of appeal and the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • During Mr. Murphy’s tenure as Solicitor General, Ohio joined states challenging the Affordable Care Act and the Clean Power Plan.
  • At Jones Day, Mr. Murphy’s practice focused on corporate and appellate litigation. He argued several cases in the federal courts of appeal during his tenure at the law firm.

Professional Associations:

  • Murphy is listed as an expert for the Federalist Society, and has spoken on panels addressing topics such as the Supreme Court, Originalism, Executive Power, and the Obamacare litigation.

Honors:

  • Under Mr. Murphy’s leadership, the appellate section of the Ohio Attorney General’s office has received three times the “Best Brief” award from the National Association of Attorneys General. Mr. Murphy was also recognized “Litigator of the Week” by American Lawyer while at Jones Day.
