We now know a bit more:
- Smith has produced zero witnesses who can corroborate the allegations she shared with Marcia Coyle regarding Justice Thomas. The people Coyle does cite are Smith’s housemates from the time, who are fellow alumnae of Hillary Clinton’s alma mater, Wellesley College.
- Laura Fink, the most prominent of the roommates, is the co-founder and president of a political consulting firm in California with strong ties to Democratic elected officials and labor unions, including Hillary Clinton and the SEIU. She was a registered Democrat in the District of Columbia in 2000. Here she is pictured with Bill Clinton.
- Another housemate, Carrie Farmer, claims she remembers a discussion, but her “memory of the details is fuzzy.” Farmer is also a registered Democrat, both during her college days and while she lived in Washington.
- In contrast, three of the other guests at the dinner—including Louis Blair, the head of the host organization at the time—said they had no knowledge of any “untoward activity” at the dinner. Blair noted that there were approximately 16 attendees “floating around” three rooms, and he is “skeptical that the justice and Moira would have been alone.”
- The only other person to back Smith’s story, her ex-husband, Paul Bodnar, is a former Obama White House official.
In other words, Moira Smith has produced a few Democratic hacks to back her story (and tepidly at that), but exactly zero witnesses.
Think about that for a moment. A justice of the U.S. Supreme Court was the guest of honor at a tiny event, surely attracting the sort of swarm the justices tend to attract, yet not a single witness can corroborate Smith’s outlandish story. I am shocked that Coyle decided to go with such thin gruel.
