Carney on Jay-Z Rap about Cuba Trip: ‘I Guess Nothing Rhymes with Treasury’

White House press secretary Jay Carney denied that President Obama had anything to do with giving Jay-Z and Beyoncé clearance to visit Cuba last week following a newly-released song by the rapper. The lyrics from Jay-Z’s “Open Letter” song released today referenced both the White House and the president:

Boy from the hood but got White House clearance

Sorry y’all, I don’t agree with y’all appearance

Obama said ‘chill, you gonna get me impeached’

But you don’t need this [expletive] anyway

Chill with me on the beach

“I guess nothing rhymes with ‘Treasury,’” Carney told reporters, saying that the White House had nothing to do with it because the Treasury Department is responsible for authorizing trips to Cuba. “The president did not communicate with Jay-Z over this trip.”
