EU Takes Step Toward Sanctioning Russia

According to a Reuters report, members of the EU have agreed to the wording of proposed sanctions on Russia, which will be sent to EU foreign ministers for approval on Monday. The seven-page document includes measures to freeze the assets and restrict the travel of those who the EU deems responsible for violating Ukrainian sovereignty.

Article One of the document says, “Member states shall take the necessary measures to prevent the entry into, or transit through, their territories of the natural persons responsible for actions which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.”

The second article calls for freezing the assets of those same people. However, the EU has not yet created a list of those to be sanctioned. Officials from the U.S., Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and other countries reportedly met on Tuesday to discuss which individual Russians should be sanctioned.

President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will reportedly not be on the list, though advisers close to Putin will be.
