Via Tweet Tracker: @edhenrycnn: “Rep Mike Castle running for Delaware Senate seat. Coup for GOP and likely sets up tight race b/w Castle and VP Biden’s son.”
More from the AP:
Nine-term Delaware Republican congressman Michael Castle is running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Joe Biden last year after the Democrat was elected vice president.
In a brief, exclusive interview with The Associated Press before his official announcement Tuesday, Castle said he’s running because he can do more for Delaware in the Senate.
His decision means he could face Biden’s son, Delaware attorney general Beau Biden, who’s weighing a bid for the Democratic nomination. Beau Biden has not announced his political plans.
The seat is currently held by longtime Biden aide and confidante Ted Kaufman, who was appointed by then Gov.-Ruth Ann Minner. But Kaufman has said repeatedly that he will not run in 2010.
