Nikki Haley In Favor of ‘Constitutional Carry’

Add South Carolina’s Republican governor, Nikki Haley, to the growing number of American politicians who are hoping to do away with firearm carry-licensing completely. Per The State:

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley said Tuesday that she backs a proposal that would make it legal for most South Carolinians to carry guns – concealed or in the open – without a permit or the training that the state currently requires.

Haley made her comments after she signed into law a bill that allows gun owners with licenses to carry concealed weapons into businesses that serve alcohol – restaurants and bars – as long as they do not drink alcohol and the businesses did not bar guns.

After signing the restaurant and bar bill, Haley said she backs a pending state Senate bill, called the “Constitutional Carry Act,” that would eliminate the state’s current permitting and training requirements for citizens who wish to carry firearms. puts the idea like this: “No tests. No taxes. No paperwork. No fingerprints in the criminal database. No photographs. No expiration dates. No plastic-coated permission slip. Just rights. For all law-abiding adults.” Sounds good to me. Indeed, Vermont, Wyoming, Alaska, Arizona, and Arkansas already have “Constitutional Carry” regimes (Montana does, too, outside of its cities), and similar measures are awaiting a vote in a number of other states – among them Ohio and Oklahoma.

The rest here.

(By the by, South Carolina actually has some peculiar reciprocity rules, which can make it difficult for permit holders who are traveling down the East Coast to keep their guns on them without fear of breaking the law. Hopefully the change will apply to non-residents, too.)
