Portman: Obama Needs to Give Democrats ‘Political Cover’ on Entitlement Reform

While he was encouraged by the president’s outreach to Republicans this week, Senator Rob Portman (R., Ohio) said President Obama needs to do the same with his own party’s members. The president needs to “ensure that he gives [Democrats] the political cover to do, frankly, what most of them know needs to be done” in reforming programs such as Social Security and Medicare, Portman said on Face the Nation this morning. He also urged Obama to use the office of the presidency to inform the American people of the state of these programs and the reforms necessary to keep them sustainable.
