Romney: Russia Is Spending Too Much on Sochi

On Meet the Press, Mitt Romney tore into the Russian government for spending $50 billion to host the Sochi games, discussing his USA Today op-ed on the issue.

“Olympic sport can be demonstrated at $2 or $3 billion dollars,” he said, “and all that extra money can be used to do some very important things in terms of fighting poverty and fighting disease around the world.”

He added that the main benefactors of the lavish spending are Russian politicians, including Vladimir Putin, who stand to make huge PR wins from the spectacle, and that the International Olympic Committee should move to curtail exorbitant spending on the games.
