A Warning to Democrats

Andrew Levison and Ruy Teixeira say that the Democrats need more white working-class voters, especially in elections below the presidential level.

In 2016 GOP messaging will be far more focused on expressing concern for “the middle class” and “average Americans.” Rhetorically attractive (but substantively vacuous) policy packages aimed at the middle class, like those recently offered by GOP house [majority] leader Eric Cantor, will become a standard feature of GOP campaigns. Future contests will be harder, not easier.
