Ed Schools under the Microscope

In a Pope Center piece, Jay Schalin writes about the event we hosted last week, in which we took a close look at education schools and found them wanting.

I think the big lesson from the forum was this: We get much better teachers by looking for individuals who have high human capital to begin with and spending a small amount of time honing their pedagogical skills than by following our current path of luring into educational schools lots of young people who are low in human capital and spending years on their pedagogical skills. One of the speakers, an administrator at a charter school, said that they avoid hiring people who have education credentials because they think it better to train good people from scratch.
