Robert Kuttner on the Real Problem with Strauss-Kahn

At the Huffington Post, The American Prospect co-editor Robert Kuttner hits on the real Dominique Strauss-Kahn scandal: the hotel room where he allegedly raped a maid was too fancy:

For demolishing the Socialists’ claim to speak for the common Frenchman and woman, it’s hard to beat an accusation of the entitled Socialist standard bearer orally raping a chambermaid in a $3,000 luxury hotel room and then trying to skip town.

The Kuttner piece is bizarre, focusing on Strauss-Kahn’s luxury lifestyle and treating the rape almost as an afterthought. But of course, Strauss-Kahn was not arrested for driving a Porsche. Unless maid-rape is much more prevalent among left-wing European political leaders than I thought, it’s just not true that “The apparent self-destruction of Dominique Strauss-Kahn in a New York hotel is emblematic of a European left that has ceased to be much of a progressive alternative.”

Of course, taking headline events and stretching them to claim they make the case for something you already believed is an old tradition in hackery. It’s just not usually this gross.

Kuttner ends with this observation:

I suppose we Americans can take pride that our president has never been accused of assaulting a chamber maid in a luxury hotel. Now, if he would just assault the financial barons.

 You stay classy, Bob.

Obstruction Confusions

In his Lawfare critique of one of my several columns about the purported obstruction case against President Trump, Gabriel Schoenfeld loses me — as I suspect he will lose others — when he says of himself, “I do not think I am Trump-deranged.” Gabe graciously expresses fondness for me, and the feeling is ... Students’ Anti-Gun Views

Are children innocents or are they leaders? Are teenagers fully autonomous decision-makers, or are they lumps of mental clay, still being molded by unfolding brain development? The Left seems to have a particularly hard time deciding these days. Take, for example, the high-school students from Parkland, ... Read More
