8. Francis X. Maier: Clarifications after Dobbs
The Supreme Court’s recent Dobbs decision is a gift that keeps on giving. And one of its benefits is clarity, especially in light of John 8:32. Truth may be unwelcome. It can make us uncomfortable, or worse. But it does make us free; free to see the world as it really is, and free to do something about it.
….
In their 1998 pastoral statement Living the Gospel of Life, written at a time when Roe seemed unlikely ever to be overturned, the U.S. bishops stressed that
The United States has thrived because, at its best, it embodies a commitment to human freedom, human rights and human dignity. But success often bears the seeds of failure. . . .We are now witnessing the gradual restructuring of American culture according to ideals of utility, productivity and cost-effectiveness. It is a culture where moral questions are submerged by a river of goods and services and where the misuse of marketing and public relations subverts public life.
The losers in this ethical sea change will be those who are elderly, poor, disabled and politically marginalized. None of these pass the utility test; and yet, they at least have a presence. They at least have the possibility of organizing to be heard. Those who are unborn, infirm and terminally ill have no such advantage. They have no “utility,” and worse, they have no voice. As we tinker with the beginning, the end and even the intimate cell structure of life, we tinker with our own identity as a free nation dedicated to the dignity of the human person.
Catholics and other good people committed to speaking for the unborn child, and for America’s best ideals, spent five decades working for this post-Roe moment. They did it despite systematic media bias, intense abortion “rights” propaganda – and doubts, criticism, and pious lecturing from a choir of embarrassed co-religionists. Nothing has changed. . . .except Roe, at least, is now well and truly dead. The work continues, because it must.
10. Catholic News Agency: Pope Francis considers it an ‘incoherence’ that President Biden, a Catholic, supports abortion rights
Pope Francis has described it as an “incoherence” that President Joe Biden, a Catholic, is in favor of legal abortion.
During an interview with Univisión and Televisa broadcast July 12, Pope Francis spoke about abortion and Biden’s position, after being asked about whether to admit politicians who promote legal abortion to Holy Communion.
The Holy Father affirmed that there is scientific data that show that “a month after conception, the DNA of the fetus is already there and the organs are aligned. There is human life.”
“Is it just to eliminate a human life?” he then asked.
As for the defense of abortion by the U.S. president, Pope Francis stated that he leaves it to Biden’s “conscience.”
“Let (Biden) talk to his pastor about that incoherence,” the pope said.

13. Jor-El Godsey: No, Sen. Warren, pregnancy help centers shouldn’t be banned
Crisis pregnancy centers — as Ms. Warren prefers to call them — are universally local, grassroots efforts raised up by concerned citizens who believe that women need alternatives to abortion.
Their funding is predominantly from private individuals, mostly from the faith community, who want to make sure that women have a chance to choose something besides abortion. Whether that is the opportunity to choose to parent, or perhaps choose the parents of a loving, welcoming home.
Unlike abortion clinics, services are free of charge at pregnancy centers.
…
Love is what motivates pregnancy help centers. Love for the woman facing a difficult decision. Love for the life she carries. Love for the family being created. That’s why pregnancy centers deeply believe women can do amazing things and achieve amazing heights. They certainly believe in a woman’s intrinsic ability to make way for motherhood.

14. Wall Street Journal: ICE Says Immigrant Women in Custody Still Entitled to Abortion Services – WSJ
WASHINGTON—Top immigration officials are planning to instruct detention centers around the country that women in custody are entitled to abortions and should be transferred to receive one if they are being detained in a state where abortion is now illegal.
The directive is contained in an undated memorandum, seen by The Wall Street Journal, which cites the recent Supreme Court decision that ended the federal right to an abortion. The memo is from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Tae Johnson and is addressed to Corey Price, head of the agency’s enforcement division.
“This memorandum serves as a reminder of existing ICE policies and standards requiring that pregnant individuals detained in ICE immigration custody have access to full reproductive health care,” the memo states. “This is also a reminder that, pursuant to existing ICE policy, it may be necessary to transfer a detained pregnant individual within an area of responsibility (AOR) or to another AOR, when appropriate and practicable, in order to ensure such access.”

19. Melissa Moschella: The Ethics of Abortion: Clarifying Misconceptions
Now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned, and authority to determine abortion policy has finally been returned to the people through their elected representatives, persuading our fellow citizens that the lives of the unborn deserve legal protection is more important than ever. Unfortunately, however, public debates about abortion are distorted by numerous misconceptions and misleading slogans. Identifying and correcting these misconceptions is crucial if we are to have a reasonable public dialogue about this important and sensitive issue. That is precisely what I aim to do in this essay. Because my goal is to provide an overview of common misconceptions and how to respond to them, my arguments will be brief, but links to longer arguments will be provided for those who want to explore a particular point in greater depth.
20. Ingrid Skop: Ob-Gyn: No, The Dobbs Decision Does Not Put Women’s Lives In Danger
Now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, states face a new reality about where to draw the line in pregnancy for when abortion is permitted. In these debates, ectopic pregnancy is a key issue.
In an ectopic pregnancy, the baby implants somewhere other than the uterus — usually in a fallopian tube. The situation is fatal for the baby. It’s also dangerous for the mother. The fallopian tube can rupture, and the bleeding can be so fast and so sudden that it puts the mother’s life at risk.
Pro-life doctors and pro-life ethicists agree it is morally licit to save a mother’s life, even at her baby’s expense — but they draw a distinction between the treatment for ectopic pregnancy and an abortion.
From a pro-life perspective, delivering a baby who is ectopic is closer to delivering a baby very prematurely because the mother has life-threatening eclampsia. A baby delivered at 22 weeks may or may not survive. A baby delivered in the first trimester because of an ectopic pregnancy definitely won’t survive. But in both cases, a pro-life doctor sees herself as delivering a child, who is as much a patient as the mother.
