The Corner

40 and 44, 1984 and 2012

I’m a little late with my column today — hope you’ll think better late than never. The first item is about Reagan, and Obama. We’ve been hearing a lot about Reagan in this campaign.

Obama says, “We inherited a mess. We couldn’t fix it in one term. We need another. Give us the time.” Did Reagan do that? He too inherited a mess. He then curbed government and unleashed private enterprise. The first couple of years were brutal. But by the time 1984 rolled around, he was able to say, “We’ve done it. We merit a second term. Let’s not go back.”

On taking office, Obama did the opposite of Reagan. He increased the size and scope of government. He put his foot on the throat of business. And now he’s saying, “Need more time.” Mitt Romney ought to say, very clearly, “Time has nothing to do with it. This administration’s policies are wrongheaded. More time will only perpetuate the pain.”

Anyway, I get into this, in Impromptus. Remember what Obama said in 2009? “If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.” I say, let’s hold him to it.
