It is, in federal law, a holiday to mark George Washington’s birthday. It is not a celebration of Franklin Pierce, William McKinley, and Jimmy Carter. It is not a celebration of the office of the presidency. It is true that some state governments call it “President’s Day” or “Presidents’ Day.” We should not feel obligated to follow them in this barbarism.
