Abortion Politics in Kentucky

Charlie, I’d like to add one more point on the issue of abortion and Kentucky politics: The November 2022 ballot in Kentucky featured an abortion referendum (similar to the one that failed in Kansas in August 2022), asking voters to affirm that “nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.” The pro-life side lost 48 percent to 52 percent, but on the very same ballot, Republican senator Rand Paul, sponsor of the Life at Conception Act, won his election 62 percent to 38 percent. It’s part of the post-Dobbs trend showing that many voters who cast ballots against the pro-life side in a referendum will nevertheless vote for pro-life GOP candidates.
