The ACLU’s inquisition of the little town of Hazleton, Pa., continues; yesterday’s testimony in federal court is reported here and here, and this morning’s here. The goal of the city ordinances in question is to prevent illegals from finding jobs or housing in Hazleton, something the ACLU says is both unconstitutionally discriminatory and the sole prerogative of the federal government (it seems like it’d have to be one or the other, but then I’m not a lawyer). The ACLU is joined, naturally, by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and one of the attorneys for the ACLU is a former Mexican government employee.
The head of the defense team is also a former federal government employee – our federal government; law professor Kris Kobach was Counsel to John Ashcroft after 9/11, and is chairman of the Kansas Republican Party.
Hazleton will almost certainly lose this initial trial, and have to appeal, given that it’s a non-jury trial before a clearly biased Clinton appointee who blasted the city’s ordinances in a restraining order preventing their implementation. Support Hazleton’s legal defense fund here.
