Why give the special counsel whose investigation you hate extensive access to your White House counsel? But McGahn’s interviews were part of a legal strategy of full cooperation that the White House never got any credit for. It’s a trope that Trump is “acting guilty” in the investigation. But for a long time, in actuality, he was “acting innocent,” in giving the special counsel pretty much everything he wanted.
