Acting Innocent 

The New York Times story about Don McGahn’s fulsome cooperation with Mueller is simply astonishing. Why give the special counsel whose investigation you hate extensive access to your White House counsel? But McGahn’s interviews were part of a legal strategy of full cooperation that the White House never got any credit for. It’s a trope that Trump is “acting guilty” in the investigation. But for a long time, in actuality, he was “acting innocent,” in giving the special counsel pretty much everything he wanted.
