Robert Greenwald, the Hollywood filmmaker behind Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism and Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, is trying hard to sustain interest in the new film his company has decided to distribute, The Big Buy: Tom DeLay’s Stolen Congress. The problem, of course, is that DeLay has announced his intention to leave the House, leaving his critics without a target. The Big Buy, made by two Texas filmmakers — details about it were first reported here on NRO — is billed as a film noir crime story about DeLay’s role in that state’s legislative redistricting, made with the close cooperation of DeLay prosecutor Ronnie Earle. But with DeLay gone, will a national audience care? Greenwald is clearly trying to put the best face on things:
Dear activists, colleagues and friends,
Last week brought celebrations of a great victory, Hot Tub Tom DeLay running off in defeat!
What a glorious day for the good guys. Celebrations all across the country…And lo and behold, before the cheering even stopped, the spin mongers were trying to convince us that the corruption has disappeared with tommy boy! Well, we at Brave New Films are fighting this whitewashing.
THE BIG BUY: Tom DeLay’s Stolen Congress makes it loud and clear that the corruption DeLay carried the water for is far from eliminated. In fact with the poster boy stepping down, we have more work to make sure that everyone knows about the pals, sycophants and other politicians who have dined at the trough of corporations/delay money!
My question is… WHO’S NEXT?
Who do you think is the next corrupt politician to go after?
Greenwald directs his readers to a new blog on the subject. At the blog, DeLay filmmaker Jim Schermbeck writes a piece headlined, “DeLay’s Spawn Still At Large.” “If you’re the village in one of those old Frankenstein film, and you’ve got the good doctor in custody,” Schermbeck writes, “but the creature he created is still on the loose, you can’t really say you’ve solved the problem, can you?”
