Subject: Overthrowing Maliki?

Yikes. Talk about a Diem scenario. Although I’m sure Diem was a 

much worthier guy than Maliki, but I’d hate to see any sort of coup. 

I mean, as much as we want to stabilize Iraq, the important thing is 

that we leave it with some semblance of a decent government (even if 

it may necessarily be more authoritarian than we’d wish, à la Korea 

after the war, etc.). Kicking off a coup is pretty much an invitation 

to institutionalize that in a part of the world where coups are often 

the only way governments get changed…
