“Against the Envy of Less Happier Lands”

Mickey Kaus explores how both McCain and the White House are weaseling out of their (always-insincere) support for a border fence, falling back to a “virtual fence,” meaning simply more of the sensors and other equpiment that have been used on the border for decades: “What’s odd is that they’d reveal this real position while ‘comprehensive’ reform is being debated–instead of at least dangling the possibility of a real fence in front of anti-amnesty conservatives. … Even if the McCain/Bush supporters now concede the fence issue in negotiations, why would anyone trust them?”

Why indeed.
