Ah, But the Strawberries!

Stacy McCain has a long post on a professor who’s published a new paper purporting to back up the konspiracy kookiness that Trig is not Sarah Palin’s son. I don’t care about the details of this sort of lunacy, but what struck me is how trivial it all is. At least the birthers and 9/11 truthers are dealing with matters of great consequence; if the president really had been born in Kenya (he wasn’t!) or if the Mossad had hired Halliburton to do a controlled demolition of the Twin Towers (they didn’t!), that would certainly be important to know. But who cares who Trig’s mother is? This is why Bogart’s character in The Caine Mutiny was so pathetic — if he’d been obsessed with a fictitious conspiracy to, say, steal the code book from the radio room, that would at least have been a worthy subject for concern. But strawberries? (I suggest a “reboot” of the movie, with Andrew Sullivan as Captain Queeg.)
