In the department of failing to understand the meanings of words, Alec Baldwin says it is time to “overthrow” President Trump. He doesn’t mean that in violent way, though. “In an orderly and formal way, and lawful way, we need to overthrow the government of the United States under Donald Trump,” Baldwin said Sunday night at a New Hampshire fundraiser, according to a FoxNews.com report. He added, “It is time to overthrow the government of Donald Trump — not in a violent way or unlawful way — but it must be overthrown nonetheless.”
Let’s see what Mr. Internet thinks: “overthrow (verb) to remove forcibly from power,” says the first dictionary definition I found, at Oxford Dictionaries’ Web site. Defeating the president at the polls is not overthrowing him. Voting for Democrats in Congress is not overthrowing. To overthrow is to go outside the boundaries, to mount a coup.
Democrats these days are intent on riling up crowds with violent language and then insisting in the next breath that they don’t mean it. Just last week, the former chief of law enforcement in this country suggested, of political foes, “When they go low, we kick them. That’s what this new Democratic party is about.” Only several minutes later did Holder “clarify” that “When I say we, you know, ‘We kick ‘em,’ I don’t mean we do anything inappropriate. We don’t do anything illegal. But we got to be tough, and we have to fight for the very things that John Lewis, Martin Luther King, Whitney Young — you know, all those folks gave to us.”
