Lisa Fabrizio writes: “Apart from think-tanks and conferences, conservatives who support the GOP have generally followed Ronald Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment: ‘Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.’” Yet Rich Lowry and James Taranto, she continues, have flouted this commandment in their writing about Miers. Actually, though, conservatives generally haven’t followed the Eleventh Commandment. Modern conservatism began in revolt against the Eisenhower administration. Newt Gingrich overthrew Bob Michel. And Reagan himself mounted a primary challenge to a sitting Republican president. Although it is not the whole truth, it is far more accurate to say that “conservatives have generally run insurgencies against the party establishment.”
