Jonah, point taken on the Nifong Scandal. But the actions of Duke’s president, Richard Brodhead, to eschew due process and punish the team is another scandal, all the more so since Brodhead, while Dean of Yale, prejudged guilt—again to diffuse a case with possible town-gown overtones—and, in the process, both ruined the career of popular lecturer James Van de Velde and disrupted an investigation into a still-unsolved kidnapping and murder of a Yale student. That Brodhead repeatedly puts public relations above justice is a sad reflection on his judgment and leadership.
