Law & the Courts

America, Free Speech Beacon

The ruling at the Supreme Court in Chiles v. Salazar, upholding the rights of a Colorado therapist, was a big victory for First Amendment freedoms, but Charlie elaborates on The Editors on why this decision is so significant.

“Isn’t America wonderful?” he asks. “Eight to one, this case came down. Do you know how these cases come down in other countries? Do you know how cases that are far more brazen violations of free speech come down?”

“Every other country, not some other countries. Every single other country in the world,” Charlie reminds listeners. “Most countries can’t even protect people speaking about politics. In most countries, you’re not allowed to say you think there’s too much immigration or you don’t like the president, let alone this.”

“Eight to one, our Supreme Court upheld the First Amendment rights of this therapist. And I think that that’s a beautiful thing.”

Charlie stresses that “we have a Supreme Court that is better on speech and better on religious liberty than it has been probably at any point in the history of the United States, which means that we are now living, whatever else is going wrong, through the best time in the history of the human race for free speech and conscience rights.”
