An Appalling Case of Leftist Intolerance

I’m old enough to remember when people on the left prided themselves for “speaking truth to power.” Now that they are the power, however, they enjoy stifling dissenting voices. Disagree with them, and they’ll come after you.

In today’s Martin Center article, I write about a disturbing case at Bakersfield College in California, where a history professor, Matthew Garrett, has been fired. Why? Because his views upset some of the woke zealots.

At a meeting where he came up, a college trustee said that sometimes it is necessary to “cull the herd” and get rid of faculty members like Garrett who continually disagree with the plans of the left to make the school more  and more “progressive.” Afterward, he offered an “apology” for that, but it was one of those “Kinsley gaffes” where someone in power accidentally blurts out the truth. Thanks for admitting that leftists want a monopoly.

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression weighed in with a letter to the president of the school, pointing out that there are strong legal precedents that firing Garrett would be illegal. It made no difference, so now Bakersfield College will probably have a lawsuit on its hands.
