Linked to this memo is the proposed campaign plan we received from K. T. McFarland when she was working to run as a “liberal” against Manhattan Democrat Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. It is well described in the New York Post today.
Last Friday, The New York Times said Mrs. McFarland reflected her “inexperience” and “declined to talk at length about issues”. Since then, she has claimed to be a Reagan Republican. She is far to the left of Ronald Reagan, who won New York State with Conservative Party support.
It is my belief that Mrs. McFarland offers no real choice for Republicans, Conservatives, or swing Democrat voters vs. Senator Clinton. This is why, since last year we have been working to help John Spencer’s campaign for U.S. Senate. John Spencer has won tough elections. He is experienced and can unite the Republican and Conservative parties. Mrs. McFarland cannot.
Just last night, when asked about how she would have voted on the war in Iraq on Hardball, she said, “I don’t know.” Senator Clinton and Congresswoman Maloney are to her right.
If Mrs. McFarland were a Republican nominee vs. Senator Clinton, our voters would either stay home by the hundreds of thousands or vote on the Conservative line for John Spencer. This would hurt our candidates for Congress, State Senate and Assembly, especially in the suburbs and upstate New York. It is time that our party gets serious and unites behind John Spencer for U.S. Senate.
