Annan’s Reax

CAPTURE OF SADDAM HUSSEIN CAN SPUR SEARCH FOR PEACE, ANNAN SAYS

New York, Dec 14 2003 2:00PM

Reacting to the news that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been taken into custody, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today said this could help stabilize the war-ravaged country.

“The Secretary-General considers that the capture of Saddam Hussein, the epitome of the former regime, is an important event,” a UN spokesman said in a statement released in New York. “It offers an opportunity to give fresh impetus to the search for peace and stability in Iraq, on the basis of an inclusive and fully transparent process.”

Through his spokesman, Mr. Annan reiterated the UN’s readiness “to do everything possible to help Iraqis, if asked and as circumstances permit.”
