R.I.P. Justice Scalia

Thirty years ago, as a very young White House staffer, I attended the swearing in of Justice Scalia (and, at the same ceremony, of Chief Justice Rehnquist). I sat behind an extravagantly bearded fellow who, my seatmates whispered, would be President Reagan’s next choice for the Court (they were correct).

Agree or disagree with Scalia on whatever legal issues (and I’m sure my colleagues will have much to say on that subject), one must acknowledge that he enjoyed his work — which is one of the most important factors in a happy life. So is a strong religious faith, which he also had.

Rest in peace.
