The full Republican Platform Committee is debating the energy section of the platform right now. Earlier, a delegate from Alaska offered an amendment to the draft that called explicitly for opening ANWR to drilling. The full committee voted the amendment down in order to protect McCain, who opposes ANWR drilling. Members of the energy subcommittee pointed out that they added language to the draft yesterday that sort of calls for opening ANWR without putting McCain on the spot.
