AOC’s Laughable Attempt to Blame Crime on GOP Governors

I’m comfortable with the notion that when you’re whatabouting, you’re losing. So Jim Jordan’s attempt to downplay the January 6 committee hearing last night by asking about hypothetical hearings on other pressing problems — including, “When’s the primetime hearing on record crime in Democrat-run cities?” — amounted to a rote, weak response from the Trump bench.

Even weaker was AOC’s clapback: “According to CBS News out of the Top 10 deadliest cities in America, 7 of them are in Republican-run states.”

As if the rejoinder was so devastating it required factual backup lest readers suspect she made it up, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted the source data, a CBS listicle of the deadliest U.S. cities.

But of course, there’s this: On what plane of existence is a governor more responsible for city crime rates than that city’s mayor? No points will be awarded for the correct response.

For context, this is the list of deadliest cities: St. Louis, Baltimore, Birmingham, Detroit, Dayton, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Kansas City, Memphis, and Cleveland.

Every single one of them has a Democratic mayor.

It is city policies — and of course the actions of murderous individuals — that are most responsible for the crime wave. Restrained deployment of police is a local decision. Lax prosecution by DAs is a local decision. San Francisco voters did not give Chesa Boudin the boot because they were mad at Governor Gavin Newsom, who survived his recall.

More on-topic was AOC’s follow-up question to Jordan: “were you one of the members who sought a pardon after Jan 6th?”

Based on Liz Cheney’s reveal last night, it would be interesting to know.
