Appeasement On The American Left

Appeasers in America’s party of the left? No way, John. Will there be American political fallout from the London bombings? Certainly not. And why not? Because the Democrats have finally gotten their act together, that’s why. Taking up Peter Beinart’s program, the Dems have purged the MoveOn and Michael Moore types. They’ve minimized the influence of Dean-style doves on the national party apparatus. They’ve openly repudiated the academic left. Party leaders like Kennedy have remained firm on Iraq. And of course the Democrats have fully cooperated with the president’s efforts to put together a tough second-term foreign policy team. So let’s give the Democrats due credit. Sure, the party did the right thing, but they also did the politically smart thing. Now that the public has full confidence in the Democrats’ resolve on issues of defense and foreign policy, future elections are going to be fought out exclusively on domestic issues. Thanks to their sweeping internal post-election reforms, the Democrats have at last shaken their greatest political handicap. And they said it couldn’t be done!
