The Archbishop Explains Himself

On his radio show yesterday, Hugh Hewitt interviewed Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver about his new book, Render Unto Caesar:  Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life.  Why did the Archbishop write such a book in the first place?

I have a responsibility as a bishop to clearly proclaim the Gospel in its entirety, even when people don’t want me to do that, and even when it’s difficult. So I wouldn’t claim to be particularly courageous, but I feel responsible. And if I don’t speak on the issues that I think the Lord calls me to speak, I feel guilty about that. So for me to be quiet on these issues would have been a harder burden for me to carry, perhaps, than speaking about it.
