AI industry leaders, including Elon Musk, are calling for checks on the industry to protect humanity. Today on The Editors, Jim and Noah discuss the possibility of an international treaty for AI regulation.
“I’d rather have those treaties than not have them,” says Jim.
“The idea is that when you have a broad international consensus . . . people should be looking over the shoulder and making sure that all experiments with cutting-edge AI are kept with strict barriers.”
“If you can get lots of countries to agree on this, well, that puts pressure on the countries that don’t want to sign it.”
Noah responds: “I doubt that anyone would envision, much less enforce, teeth in an AI control regime, especially if the violator was China . . . but [AI leaders] have a strange, libertarian outlook on international affairs, in which all actors are perfectly rational.”
“It’s just not how the world has ever worked.”
