In a new television spot, Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) rolls up his sleeves and talks about his family and service. McCain, ahead in the polls, makes no mention of J.D. Hayworth, his chief opponent in Arizona’s upcoming GOP Senate primary.
Hayworth, trying to climb back into contention, is avoiding the soft-focus lens and lilting strings as the Aug. 24 primary approaches. At a tea-party rally on the U.S.-Mexico border on Sunday, Hayworth took on McCain’s immigration record. “To put an end to amnesty once and for all, to secure our borders, to end any of this misguided talk about open borders, it is time to ‘regularize’ the status of John McCain,” he said to cheers. “Send him back here to be a citizen among us.”
